'Foreigner Policy' and Applied Law in Germany

Attempts to prevent the naturalisation of an Indian - A case study

In 1970 a young Indian professional applied for the German citizenship. He finally got it in 1987 - after a long court case. This presentation describes the stages in this case and analyses the underlying issues, which made the case last so long.

The internet presentation bases on the essay "‘Foreigner policy’ and applied law in Germany – Attempts to prevent the naturalisation of an Indian. A case study" (download as pdf) written in 1998. Since then there have been major changes in the citizenship law in Germany. Nonetheless this history still has its impact on migrants and institutions in Germany. A new version is available in German: Einbürgerung und Entwicklungspolitik.
